Winona was born the daughter of Ray and Ruth (Bingham) Key, on August 6, 1927, in Coloma, Missouri. The family moved to Victor, Colorado in 1941 and on to Silver Plume, Colorado a year later. She graduated from Georgetown High School in 1945, where she met her husband, Joseph Johnson. In 1976, they moved to Coloma, Missouri, where they ran the General Store for a few years, and then moved up to the homestead in 1984. Joe preceded her in death on June 6, 1994.
