Lawrence Edwin “Larry” Solomon of Meadville, Missouri passed away Sunday, June 8th, 2025 at Hedrick Medical Center, Chillicothe, Missouri. Larry was born the son of Paul and Clara May Solomon on January 21, 1942 in Marshall, Missouri. He was a member of St. Columban Parish, Chillicothe, Missouri for over 50 years. He served the church faithfully over the years including as an usher for Saturday afternoon Mass. He lived his Catholic faith very intentionally, serving others before self. Although a man of few material assets, he gave of his time and talents abundantly and many have been richly rewarded in their lives because of Larry.
His extended family and friends are truly grateful for the many reunions, parties and celebrations organized by Larry at the Timber House Ski Lodge in Winter Park, Colorado. Larry learned to ski in the Bavarian Alps of Germany while serving our great country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He honed his skill skiing every year for over 40 years in Winter Park, becoming an expert skier, known and respected by many of the ski patrol personnel. Larry worked tirelessly and patiently to teach many family members and friends to be proficient skiers, recording our progress on VCR tapes over the years. The joy we experienced on these many ski trips was priceless and would not have come to be without Larry’s vision.
Larry loved to hunt morel mushrooms. To walk the forests and riverbanks requires endurance, and to learn to recognize the morels on the ground requires patience. Larry invited many family members to hunt mushrooms, and again he earnestly taught us how to hunt them and where to look. He generously shared his bounty of fried mushrooms at many family get-togethers.
Larry was an avid fisherman, and he loved to fish the local ponds and creeks. He also planted big gardens, sending us home with an abundance of beautiful fresh vegetables every year. Without fail he invited us for countless dinners featuring home-grown lettuce salads and mouth-watering fried crappie and channel catfish fillets.
Larry was always offering a helping hand to his neighbors and fellow farmers in and around Meadville. For many years he owned and ran the MFA gas station in town. The station was known as a gathering place to pass the time and enjoy a good joke or humorous story.
He was a US Army Vietnam Veteran and served in the Army Reserves. Larry was a member and past Commander of the American Legion #517, Meadville, Missouri.
Larry is survived by his sisters Helen Newman, Mary Alice Yates (husband Greg), Catherine Sanderson (husband Jerry), and one brother Peter Solomon (wife Lorene). He is also survived by 22 nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Larry was preceded in death by brothers, Harold Solomon, Maurice Solomon, James Solomon; and sisters, Irene Quigley and Elaine Willman.
